Ancient swamp Kauri

Kauri tables, made one at a time.

One table available now · NZ$11,900 · Three commissions remaining

Wolffmark makes kauri tables in Tauranga from salvaged Ancient swamp Kauri. Not a range, and not a production run. Each table comes out of a specific slab, and when that slab is used there are no more of them.

The material

Kauri that stopped growing before anyone was here to cut it.

Kauri forest once covered about 1.2 million hectares of northern New Zealand. What survives today is scattered, largely protected, and not a furniture material.

Swamp kauri is a different thing entirely. These are trees that fell naturally and were sealed underground in peat and wet ground, cut off from oxygen and decomposition for somewhere between 800 and 60,000 years. The Series I slab is from Northland and is approximately 40,000 years old.

It is salvaged, finite and regulated. Nothing standing was felled to make these tables, and when the buried material is gone there is no second source of it.

What a kauri table costs

Price follows the piece, not a size chart.

The completed Ancient Kauri River Table is NZ$11,900. Commissions from the remaining Series I material begin from NZ$11,900. Four things move the final figure.

01

Finished dimensions

How much of the allocated section survives into the finished top, and how much is lost resolving the edges and the shape.

02

Resin treatment

Whether the natural edges meet through a resin centre, as in Table 01, or the section is kept as a single continuous surface.

03

Base

Steel bases are fabricated in New Zealand. Form, finish and span are decided with the top, not chosen from a catalogue.

04

Delivery

Quoted individually against destination, weight and access. There is no automated freight calculation and no cart.

What you are choosing

The timber decides more than the drawing does.

A commissioned kauri table does not start with a specification. It starts with the section of slab allocated to it, and the natural edges, grain and historic marks that section happens to carry.

Table 01 is the physical reference for the approach, not a template the other three have to copy. Two tables from the same original slab will be recognisably related and will not be the same table.

Knots, mineral variation, small voids and the evidence of the tree's own life are kept rather than corrected. That is the point of the material.

Common questions

Before you enquire.

What does a kauri table cost in New Zealand?

The completed Ancient Kauri River Table is NZ$11,900. Commissions from Ancient Kauri Series I begin from NZ$11,900, with the final price depending on finished dimensions, resin treatment, base and delivery.

Is swamp kauri legal to buy?

Yes. Swamp kauri is salvaged timber from trees that fell naturally and were preserved underground in peat, not timber cut from surviving kauri forest. It is a finite and regulated material in New Zealand.

How long does a commissioned kauri table take?

Timing is agreed with each client once dimensions, resin treatment and base are resolved, because each piece is made individually from the material held rather than drawn from stock.

Can a kauri table be delivered outside Tauranga?

Wolffmark arranges specialist delivery throughout New Zealand. Because every piece differs in size, weight and construction, delivery is quoted individually against destination and access rather than calculated automatically. Collection from Tauranga can be arranged by appointment. Read how delivery works.

What warranty comes with a Wolffmark kauri table?

Ten years on steel bases and Wolffmark structural connections, and five years on timber joinery and resin workmanship. This is in addition to rights under the New Zealand Consumer Guarantees Act 1993. Read the warranty.

Can I see the table before buying it?

Viewings can be arranged in Tauranga by appointment. There is no cart. Each piece is confirmed with you, including availability, total price and any delivery charge, before any payment is made.

Enquire

Three sections of this Kauri are still unallocated.

Buy Table 01 as it stands, or start the conversation about what the remaining material should become. Either way the first step is the same: the space it is going into, and what you want the timber to do in it.
