The piece
One ancient slab. Recomposed, not disguised.
This table began with one slab of Ancient swamp Kauri recovered from Northland. Swamp kauri is not cut from New Zealand's surviving kauri forests; it comes from trees that fell naturally and were preserved underground in oxygen-poor peat, wetlands and other buried environments. MPI records known swamp kauri ages from about 800 to 60,000 years.
This approximately 40,000 year old material came from one slab around 250 millimetres thick. The original slab yielded enough material for four substantial tables. This is Table 01. Its sections were turned and repositioned so the original live edges meet through the centre, then flattened and refined before black resin was poured between them.
A raw steel H-beam base, fabricated in New Zealand and clear coated to retain its natural finish, carries the scale of the top without competing with it. The Kauri is protected with German-made Osmo oil, with New Zealand-made stainless steel fixings selected for lasting strength.

The material
A relic of a forest largely gone.
Kauri forest once covered about 1.2 million hectares of northern New Zealand. Logging, gum extraction, fire and land clearance transformed that landscape. Te Ara records about 7,455 hectares of mature kauri forest remaining today, scattered in remnant patches; surviving kauri is now largely protected.
Ancient swamp kauri is a finite legacy beneath the ground. MPI estimates that 50–70% of Northland's swamp kauri resource may still remain buried, while also stating that significant amounts may never receive approval for extraction or milling. Milling and export are tightly controlled.
The timber also carries scientific value. Growth rings from swamp kauri are used to study ancient climates and ecosystems, environmental change, radiocarbon dating and extreme events far beyond recorded New Zealand history.

Making the table
Every decision follows the timber.
The supporting materials are deliberately quiet. Age, scale and natural character remain the centre of the piece.
Select
Choose the slab for age, stability, grain and the evidence held in its surface.
Recompose
Divide and turn the slab so its original live edges form the centre of the table.
Resolve
Flatten both faces, build the resin channel, pour the black centre and refine the surface by hand.
Support
Set the finished top on a clear-coated raw steel base fabricated in New Zealand.
