A single slab, allowed to speak.
The Ancient Kauri River Table began with one slab recovered from the ancient swamps of Northland. The timber is approximately 40,000 years old and the original slab was approximately 120 millimetres thick.
The slab was divided into two sections, then turned and repositioned so the original live edges meet through the centre. Both faces were flattened and refined before black resin was poured between them.
A raw steel H beam base, fabricated in New Zealand and clear coated to retain its natural finish, carries the scale of the top without competing with it. The Kauri is protected with German made Osmo oil, with New Zealand made stainless steel fixings selected for lasting strength.

Making the table
Every decision follows the timber.
The supporting materials are deliberately quiet. Age, scale and natural character remain the centre of the piece.
Recompose
Divide and turn the slab so its live edges form the centre of the table.
Resolve
Flatten the faces, pour the black resin and refine the surface by hand.
Support
Set the top on a clear coated raw steel base made in New Zealand.
